a scripture verse for today

Today's Verse: John 8:12 (NIV)

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

Thoughts on Today's Verse...

There are days when the dark creeps in slow, like fog rolling over a field, and you don’t even notice till you can’t see your own hands. Maybe it’s the sting of a sharp word still echoing in your ears, or the weight of a bill you can’t pay, or just that hollow feeling you can’t name. I’ve been there—praying into silence, wondering if God’s even listening. Then Jesus steps up in John 8:12 and says something so plain and wild it stops me cold: “I am the light of the world.” Not “I’ll show you light” or “here’s a lantern”—no, He is it. And if I stick close, He swears I won’t stumble blind forever.

Think about that. The One who flung stars into the sky calls Himself my light. Me—with my doubts, my messes, my half-hearted tries. It’s not about me being good enough; it’s about Him being bright enough. Ever watch a kid cling to a parent in a dark room? That’s us, trailing after Jesus. He doesn’t promise the shadows won’t come—life’s too stubborn for that. But He says they won’t own me. I’ve seen it play out: a friend finding peace after loss, a choice made clear when panic eased. Following Him doesn’t mean I see miles ahead; it means I see enough for the next step. So what’s your dark today? Don’t hide from it—grab His sleeve and let Him light it up. He’s done it for weary hearts before us; He’ll do it again.

Today's Prayer

Lord Jesus, You’re the Light of the world, and I need You now—me and whoever’s reading this with me. You know the corners where the dark sits heavy, where we’re fumbling and afraid. Step in, God. Shine like You did when You walked this earth, when You spoke and people couldn’t look away. I’m asking You to break through for us—where we’re lost, where we’re tired, where we’ve almost given up.

We’ve wandered sometimes, chasing our own dim ideas instead of You—forgive us for that. Pull us close again. Light up the mess we’re in, like You promised in John 8:12. Give us eyes to see You when everything else blurs. Hold up the one who’s hurting; steady the one who’s choosing; lift the one who’s fallen. You said the darkness won’t win (John 1:5)—make us believe it, Lord, till it’s real in our bones. We’re Yours. Amen.
